The Work of SANCCOB
It has been an incredibly frustrating year on a myriad of fronts. One being the re-classification of the African penguin from Endangered to Critically Endangered. Sadly, we knew it was coming. The numbers gathered from both Namibia and South Africa painted a catastrophic picture. With less than 10,000 breeding pairs left in the wild, the African penguin could be extinct within ten years. Penguins are an indicator species. Their severe population decline indicates things are not well in our oceans, of which we all depend.
Frontline conservation efforts are being led by pioneering organizations such as the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). Both Melissa and I are in awe of SANCCOB’s tenacity and un-wavering commitment to seabird conservation.
